PVD Coating vs Electroplating: Which Finish Should You Specify?
Both give metal a coloured, decorative surface. They work in very different ways, suit different base metals and age differently. Here is how we decide between them on real projects in Jeddah.
What PVD coating is
Physical Vapour Deposition bonds a very thin titanium- or zirconium-based layer to polished stainless steel inside a vacuum chamber. The colour is part of the metal surface rather than a paint film, which is why PVD resists scratching, tarnish and UV far better than paint. Typical tones are champagne gold, rose gold, bronze, black, titanium and copper, and the final look follows the base finish: mirror, satin or hairline.
What electroplating is
Electroplating deposits a layer of another metal (24K gold, chrome, nickel, brass or copper) onto the part using an electrical current in a chemical bath. It works on brass, copper, mild steel and zinc alloys as well as stainless, and it can produce bright, satin or antique looks. The plated layer is softer than PVD and usually needs a clear lacquer or regular care on high-touch surfaces.
Side-by-side
| Criterion | PVD coating | Electroplating |
|---|---|---|
| Base metal | Stainless steel (SS304 / SS316) | Brass, copper, steel, zinc, stainless |
| Hardness & scratch resistance | High | Medium; depends on plating thickness |
| Tarnish / UV resistance | Excellent, no lacquer needed | Good with lacquer; may need re-polishing |
| Colour range | Gold, rose gold, bronze, black, titanium, copper | Gold, chrome, nickel, brass, copper, antique |
| Best for | Cladding, railings, door pulls, lift interiors, façades | Cast or brass decorative pieces, classical detailing, restoration |
| Batch colour matching | Single chamber run per project | Controlled by bath chemistry and time |
How we choose on a project
- High-traffic or exterior surface on stainless → PVD, on SS316 near the coast.
- Brass or cast decorative element → electroplating, with lacquer where hands touch it.
- Large aluminium or steel structure → neither; powder coating or 2K polyurethane paint in any RAL colour.
- Exact tone across hundreds of panels → PVD in one batch, inspected against an approved sample under controlled light.
Both processes run inside our own facility in Jeddah, so we can sample the same design in PVD and plating and let you compare them under your project lighting before production. See our PVD coating and electroplating pages for specifications.
Frequently asked questions
Which lasts longer, PVD or electroplating?
On architectural stainless steel, PVD generally lasts longer. The titanium-based PVD layer is harder and more scratch- and tarnish-resistant than most plated layers, which is why we specify it for high-touch surfaces such as door pulls, railings and lift interiors.
Can PVD be applied to brass or mild steel?
PVD is bonded to stainless steel. For brass, mild steel or non-stainless substrates we use electroplating (gold, chrome, nickel, brass or copper) or powder coating, depending on the colour and environment.
Is PVD suitable for exterior use in Jeddah?
Yes, on SS316 with a proper base finish PVD holds its colour outdoors, including humid and coastal conditions. The base stainless grade matters more than the coating: choose SS316 near the sea.
How do I get the same colour on every panel?
Ask for single-batch coating. We coat all panels of a project in the same PVD run so that tone and gloss match across cladding, trims and fixtures.
