How to Clean and Maintain PVD-Coated Stainless Steel
PVD-coated stainless is one of the lowest-maintenance decorative finishes available, but it still needs the right routine, especially on high-touch surfaces and in Jeddah's salty air. This is the care guide we hand over with every project.
Routine cleaning
- Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth and warm water with a few drops of neutral soap.
- Wipe along the grain on satin and hairline finishes.
- Rinse with clean water and dry with a separate soft cloth to prevent water spots.
- For fingerprints on mirror or gold surfaces, a diluted glass cleaner without ammonia works well.
What to avoid
- Abrasive powders, scouring pads, steel wool and stiff brushes.
- Bleach, chlorine-based cleaners, hydrochloric acid and strong descalers.
- Leaving salt spray, cement dust or construction residue on the surface for long periods.
- Adhesive tapes and protective films left on under direct sun.
Exterior and coastal surfaces
Salt and dust settle on every surface in Jeddah. A fresh-water rinse every one to three months removes chlorides before they cause tea staining, and it is far cheaper than restoration. For façades within reach of sea spray we specify SS316 as the base metal so the panel itself resists corrosion at edges and fixings.
During construction and handover
Keep the protective film on until other trades have finished, remove it before it bakes in the sun, and clean the panels once with mild soap before inspection. Ask your contractor to protect PVD surfaces from grinding sparks and cement splashes, which can embed iron particles.
Restoration
Light surface marks can often be reduced by professional cleaning and re-passivation. PVD cannot be spot-repaired on site; a damaged panel is returned to the workshop, re-polished and re-coated in the recorded project tone. Read our PVD coating page for finish specifications.

Can I use a stainless steel cleaner on PVD?
Use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner or diluted neutral soap with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive powders, scouring pads and cleaners containing chlorides or bleach, which can mark the surface and attack the stainless underneath.
Does PVD fade in the sun?
PVD colour is a bonded metallic layer, not a pigment, so it does not fade like paint. Exterior colour stability depends on keeping the surface clean of salt and dust and on using SS316 as the base in coastal locations.
How often should exterior PVD surfaces be cleaned?
Wash with fresh water and mild soap every one to three months in coastal or dusty locations, more often near pools or where fingerprints show. Interior high-touch pieces such as door pulls benefit from a weekly wipe.
Can a scratched PVD panel be repaired?
Light marks can often be reduced by professional cleaning, but PVD cannot be touched up on site. A damaged panel is re-polished and re-coated, which is why we keep project batch records to match the original tone.
